And, we got an aquarium

May 26, 2008

This is the new aquarium. We’ve got about 40 fishies in it, but I don’t know how to take a picture of it yet without it being overexposed or blurry. So, I’m settling for blurry until I figure this camera out.

Roy Jones Jr Update

May 20, 2008

The updates, by the way, are in anticipation of the Great Roy Jones returning to the top of the sport. Ultimately, a fight with Joe Calzaghe will do that. Based on his last three fights, RJJ has finally returned to the light heavyweight rankings, and hopefully he will see fit to engage with Calzaghe, who currently resides as the Ring Magazine #3 Pound for Pound fighter, the Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight Champion, the Ring Magazine/WBA/WBC/WBO Supermiddleweight Champion, with a 45-0 record. Jones is currently 6th ranked in the Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight rankings, with this explanation from BadLeftHook.com

6. Roy Jones, Jr. (52-4, 38 KO)
Speaking of guys who once looked lost but now may be found, Jones has stormed back into the conversation, and the talk of his demise appears to have been at least slightly exaggerated.
The stunning three-fight losing streak of 2004-05 is history. He’s won three in a row, not over the best competition, but certainly comparable to anyone else here besides Calzaghe and Hopkins. Do Prince Badi Ajamu, Anthony Hanshaw and Felix Trinidad really pale in comparison to Muriqi, Santiago and Woods? Dawson’s last three fights include Jesus Ruiz and Epifanio Mendoza, hardly world-class opposition.
The fight with Tito was interesting. Roy took the first three rounds to find out what Tito had, and then turned it up. I truly feel that if he’d felt like it, he would have knocked Trinidad right out. Tito clearly got in over his head at the weight and after so much time off.
But what I really find intriguing about that fight is watching Jones move. He had some of the nostalgic prime vibe about him, but everything was just a little slower. Even the showboating was 39 years old, you know? Roy can still fight and a bout with Calzaghe would be good entertainment if years too late to be what it really could have been at one point. I’ll always have a soft spot for Roy Jones.”

Iron Man Movie Review

May 17, 2008

I haven’t seen it…in fact, the only movie I’ve seen in about 8 months (in a theater, that is) was about 2/3rds of the movie “21” with Kevin Spacey, when I was supposed to be chaperoning Lennon, his friend Waymon, and two chicks on a date to see “College Road Trip.”

Because I can’t really make the time for movies, though, I generally decide whether the movie is any good and thus worth the time to set aside (usually between 9 and 11 pm during the week) once the movie is out on DVD or OnDemand, and it ultimately gives me something to look forward to. So the question here is “Should I look forward to seeing Iron Man on DVD”

First, I like Robert Downey, but for some reason don’t like any of his movies except for “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” which I only like because it falls in that Pulpy Fiction Snatchy Two Guns and a Smoking Barrelly sort of film. I know he’s supposed to be a great actor and everything, but I’m not all that interested. Ordinarily I would think that his snarky way would translate well into a superhero movie, but my recollection of Iron Man (who I was a big fan of when I read comics, and especially when he was a member of The Avengers, and especially around issues 99 – 100 – 101 – Let Slip the Dogs of War) was that he was an extremely screwed up guy and an alcoholic. I can appreciate the update, but the Avengers were a bunch of dark and messed up people. So I don’t know if the character, retooled in Robert Downey’s image is going to be all that appealing. But everyone else says it works great, so I’m going to say that in that regard, I can probably just wait to see what all the fuss is about.
The special effects are supposed to be great, as well, but I’m far less impressed by special effects than I’m supposed to be. Call it retro, but I still don’t think that computer animation, awesome though it is, holds a candle to really well done stop motion animation, modeling, and the other special effects I grew up with. Compare “Star Wars” with “Revenge of the Sith” (if you’re so inclined).
So that really leaves the popcorn entertainment appeal, which is what would draw me to this movie if I could make it to the theater. Loud explosions, jet planes, superheros, etc. Unfortunately, the issue is DVDs and OnDemand, and the Summer Blockbuster just doesn’t translate as well on the small screen, so that is a wash.
Ultimately, I think its a movie I can do without, and eventually it will roll around on HBO or Starz, so I’ll probably wait for that. Maybe I’ll rent it, but it could very easily sit around on top of the DVD player until I get the “friendly reminder” from Blockbuster that the thing is two days overdue.

We’re Old…

May 17, 2008

Shannon wrote:
“Radiohead? Really? I thought loving them made me hip. I guess it makes me old.”
The actual question is even more severe –
“Dad needs help downloading “In Rainbows”, but he always said this Thom Yorke band was ahead of its time” (emphasis mine).

Things My Father Taught Me

May 16, 2008

I remember the induction ceremony into Pfeiffer College’s (now University) Sports Hall of Fame. I don’t know if Dad remembers it, but I think he wrote his speech there at the table before he accepted it. However, I’m constantly reminded of it with 3 kids, 47 employees, and a $4.5mil business expecting me to do the right thing all the time.
The speech was about Fundamentals. Learn them, practice them constantly, refine them, and base everything you do on them, and things will tend to turn out fine.
It’s very hard to do.
But it’s real wisdom – when I bring this up to Lennon I feel like Buddha.

We’re old….

May 15, 2008

The category on yesterday’s Jeopardy was “Pop’s Music,” about the music of the College contestant’s parent’s generation. The answers (or questions, I guess) were:

Madonna
Flava Flav
Radiohead
Beastie Boys
Led Zeppelin

Weird that I have to be reminded.

Here’s a link to the actual questions

Roy Jones, Jr Update

May 13, 2008

Frank Warren revealed in his latest “Frankly Speaking” column that Don King recently traveled to the UK and the two promoters held a meeting to discuss several possible key bouts for the future.

The two were working hard to hammer out a deal for the November meeting between Joe Calzaghe (now a light heavyweight and still the WBC/WBO/WBA super middleweight champion) and Roy Jones Jr (former four-division champion).
